The Public Schools Branch designs, develops, implements, and evaluates programs, courses, services, related policies and resources including student and teaching resources to support implementation, for the public school system, correspondence studies, and on-line learning.
Additionally, this branch:
offers English first and second language programs, French second language programs, and courses in other languages including Gaelic, Mi’kmaq, and others
co-ordinates early learning programs, and the development, delivery and evaluation of youth engagement and development initiatives, and related projects
designs, develops, administers, marks, and reports on provincial, national, and international assessments of student achievement
provides resources for special education, comprehensive guidance and counseling, multi-cultural education
supports and advocates for for, diversity, equity and anti-discriminatory practices
supports the educational achievement of Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotians
evaluates and provides print and technological learning resources, and advises school boards on the effective use of information and communications technology (ICT) and non-print media in support of learning
provides professional development for administrators and teachers
manages ICT requirements for school construction and renovation projects
co-ordinates education program, service, and performance quality standards
administers the Nova Scotia School Accreditation Program
provides labour relations support to school boards
advises school boards on educational and operational matters
