Elwin LeRoux

Elwin LeRoux was appointed Deputy Minister of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in January 2023.

Biography

Before joining the Government of Nova Scotia in 2022, Elwin worked for more than 30 years in public education as a teacher, principal and school board executive.

Elwin has a Bachelor of Science (honours) in Mathematics and Computer Science from St. Francis Xavier University and a Master of Education (Administration) and a Master of Arts (Education) from Saint Mary’s University.

Elwin has a passion for creating equitable and inclusive learning environments. He has served on the Board of The Learning Partnership (a former Canadian charity connecting business, educators and partners). He’s also a founding and alumni member of the C21 Canada CEO Academy.

Current role

Deputy Minister, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is responsible for managing the public education system, including early childhood programs and activities, and regulating the licensed childcare sector. They support the management of the Regional Centres for Education and work closely with the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP).

Responsibilities include:

  • administering the grade primary to 12 public education system
  • administering the Nova Scotia Pre-primary Program
  • overseeing the 7 Regional Centres for Education and working with the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) to make sure there's consistent academic standards and experiences across the public education system
  • regulating the licensed childcare sector
  • developing and implementing educational programs and services for students
