Community-Based Learning

Community-based learning gives students the opportunity to learn both inside the classroom and out in the community. Community-based learning can be for all students, at all grade levels in any course. By providing students opportunities to use their knowledge and skills in a community experience, students can see how their skills transfer to new settings.

Goals of Community-Based Learning are to:

  1. provide opportunities for students’ personal growth
  2. enhance students’ development as citizens who actively participate in and contribute positively to their communities
  3. help prepare students for future opportunities, responsibilities, and experience
  4. foster, promote, and develop student self-esteem, and confidence
  5. strengthen connections between school and community

Some examples of community-based learning include field trips, guest speakers, job shadows, service learning, co-operative education, and project-based learning.
