Co-op is good for business. It gives you the opportunity to:

What does the school provide?
  • students whose knowledge, skills and interests meet your needs
  • insurance for students while they are at your workplace
  • safety training such as First Aid, OH&S and WHMIS
 
What does it cost?
The only cost is the time and resources required to train and supervise the student. You are not required to pay students.
 
 
How Does Co-operative Education Benefit Students?
Co-operative Education provides students with the opportunity to:
  • make connections between school and work and explore a career of interest before determining plans for post-secondary education, training, or employment
  • see the relevance of their classroom learning in a work setting
  • develop the essential skills and work habits required in the workplace and acquire an understanding of workplace expectations
  • gain valuable experience to help build personal growth and social skills needed in today’s workplace
  • develop their résumés for post-secondary programs and future employment
  • experience authentic and purposeful learning outside the school/classroom setting

How is Co-operative Education Delivered?
  • A student in high school must be 16 years of age, successfully complete the in-school component of co-op and meet readiness criteria before being placed in the community.
  • Access to Co-operative Education courses is based on student readiness and program availability.
  • Co-operative Education placements are available in many types of work settings, reflecting the wide range of student interests and abilities. Placement time can be completed during regular school hours, evening, weekends, holidays, or summer. This will depend upon employer and student availability and the nature of the career explored. Flexibility and creative scheduling are major variables in program success.
 
Insurance
  • Students are covered by student accident insurance while on a Co-operative Education work placement.
  • A certificate of insurance showing commercial general liability insurance coverage through the School Insurance Program (SIP) can be provided by the teacher upon request.
