Program Overview

  • Full-time, two-year diploma program.
  • Individuals gain employment in a licensed child care or Pre-primary program while earning a diploma through part-time online studies.
  • Virtual asynchronous delivery – there are no set class times. There will be opportunities to engage with your instructor and classmates in weekly discussions online.
  • Work while studying, and complete practicums at your workplace.

Free Tuition and Priority Admission

EECD is fully funding the costs of tuition, textbooks, and other program fees for those recently hired as untrained educators and living, or planning to work in one of the following designated areas:

  • Northern (Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough Counties)
  • South Shore (Lunenburg and Queens Counties)
  • Western Cape Breton (Inverness, Victoria & Richmond Counties).

Residents of the above designated areas will be prioritized for admission.

Applicants without a current position who are residents in hard-to-recruit communities will be added to a waitlist, and may be offered a seat only after applicants with current positions or job offers.

Applicants in other areas of the province will be added to a waitlist, and may be offered a seat only after the waitlist of applicants in hard-to-recruit areas is exhausted.

 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for funding and priority admission:

  • Applicants must live in one of the above hard-to-recruit areas and be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Nova Scotia.
  • Applicants must be employed (less than 12 months) or guaranteed employment in a licensed child care centre or Pre-primary program.
  • Work at least 15 hours per week throughout the duration of the diploma program (in licensed child care or Pre-primary program), and the ability to complete practicums at your place of work.
  • Provide written verification from your employer that
    • supports your participation in the program,
    • agrees to provide you a minimum of 15 hours of work per week for the duration of the program, and
    • commits to supporting you in workplace practicum experiences.
  • Temporary foreign workers, international students, or any other person in Canada on a temporary resident visa do not qualify.
