Diversity in Communications Bursary

The Diversity in Communications Bursary supports students from underrepresented groups to promote equity and representation in the communications field. Recognizing the importance of diverse voices in shaping inclusive and impactful messaging, this award helps empower the next generation of communicators. Administered by the African Canadian Services Branch of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the bursary reflects our commitment to fostering opportunity and diversity in this vital area.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

The Diversity in Communications bursaries are open to students from a diverse community, historically underrepresented in communications fields, which also aligns with the province’s current Employment Equity Policy. In 2019, steps were taken to update the criteria to include the 2SLGTBQ+ community.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Applicant must be a member of one of the following groupsAfrican Nova ScotianMi’kmaq or Indigenous, racially visible person, person with a disability, French as a first language, 2SLGBTIQ+, or another diverse community
  • Applicant must be enrolled on a full-time basis in a recognized university degree program  or Community College/Trade School program in Nova Scotia
  • Have a concentration in a communications-related field, i.e. Public Relations, Marketing, Photography, Languages, Journalism, etc.
  • Applicant must be a graduate of the Nova Scotia school system

Application Process

3 bursaries are given out yearly to students who meet the criteria. To apply for the Diversity in Communications Bursary, applicants will need to submit the following items:

  • Application form
  • Confirmation of Enrolment for the upcoming school year
  • Creative entry related to the year's theme

Creative Areas & Theme

Each of the 3 bursaries covers a specific area within communications. The bursaries will be awarded in the areas of: Images, Words or Technology

  • Images: Photography, video, or digital arts program
  • Words: Public relations/communications, journalism, languages or marketing/advertising program
  • Technology: Website design, website/app development, or graphic design/digital communications

This year's theme is "Impact"

The deadline for the 2025-26 Diversity in Communications Bursary is October 31, 2025.
Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered for the bursary.
